All about Kingdom hats by Korean history nerd

Hello guys, I realised many foriegner are interested in hats in Kingdom. So I would like to introduce hats. Before this, you need to know why people wear hat and structure of Josun dynasty. Back then, Josun dynasty was bulit on Confucianism. Korean people followed the rules and customs from confucianism even more strictly than Chinese where it began. Still it influence our life in some ways :( There was a very strict rule about body. It says "every part of body must not be damaged because your parents passed it down to you" So Korean guys can't cut their hair. I guess they don't even think about cutting hair or beard. Long hair should be tied up and covered. That's why they wear hat!

They wear different hat depending on class, job, situation. 

Dominant class account for most of population and Yang-in has a right to have exam to be government officer or military officer while Chun-in only follow their parents job.

Keep this in mind and let's have a look hat now.

1. Heug-lib (흑립)

Most iconic hat in Kingdom is Heug-lib.

It is used among Korean scholars (Yang-ban class) when they go outside. 

2. Jeong-ja-gwan (정자관)

It can be 3 layers or 5 layers

Yang-ban class wear this hat, inside of room. So it is indoor hat. But I've only seen it from high class Yang-ban.

3. Sa-mo (사모)

Samo is official hat for officer in palace. But Yana-in class can wear it in their wedding. The interesting fact is if someone get married twice, they should take off one side of hat. I guess it was kind of the way they shame someone who get married twice.

4. Ju-lib (주립)

Number 4, 5 hats are used for military officers

It has meaning of red hat. Pheasant feather or Tiger whiskers are used for decoration. 

5. Jun-lib (전립)

It looks more pratical than Ju-lib. Actually It can protect officer from arrow. But still it's not proper hat for war. Just dailiy hat but it has more protection than Julib.

6. Yang-gwan (양관)

It is ceremonial hat which is used for national ceremony or coronation.

7. Myeon-ryu-gwan (면류관)

It is also ceremonial hat but only king and prince can wear it. 

8. Beak-sa-mo

Just white version of Samo but It is worn when King passed away. Not only hat but also shoes, cloths should be white

9. Gulgun (굴건)

 It is worn when someone passed away and it is made of hemp. Back then, people should stay near parents grave for three years. sleep, eat near grave. These day we still wear this cloth and hat before bury coffin. In funeral, we wear black suit and stay there for three days not three years luckily and just before bury coffin we wear this. So it is kind of mix of west and east culture.
